{"id":204597,"date":"2024-05-16T21:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-05-16T20:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/schoolsweek.co.uk\/?p=204597"},"modified":"2024-05-16T21:53:46","modified_gmt":"2024-05-16T20:53:46","slug":"boosting-attendance-of-odd-day-absentees-the-big-prize-says-minister","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/schoolsweek.co.uk\/boosting-attendance-of-odd-day-absentees-the-big-prize-says-minister\/","title":{"rendered":"Boosting attendance of &#8216;odd day&#8217; absentees the &#8216;big prize&#8217;, says minister"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Boosting the attendance of pupils who miss the \u201codd day\u201d is the \u201creally big prize\u201d for schools, academies minister Baroness Diana Barran has told <em>Schools Week.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Following a breakdown of Department for Education school attendance figures, Barran\u2019s team discovered 31 per cent of children missed five to 15 per cent of school in the last academic year, up from 21 per cent before the pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The number equates to 1 million secondary pupils and 1.1 million children at primary schools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A new attendance tool allows schools to reveal absence trends across year groups and pupil characteristics. It also breaks data down into five per cent bandings for more effective analysis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-full is-resized\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"400\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/schoolsweek.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Baroness-Barran-headshot-400px.jpg\" alt=\"Baroness Barran\" class=\"wp-image-191949\" style=\"aspect-ratio:1;object-fit:cover;width:200px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/schoolsweek.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Baroness-Barran-headshot-400px.jpg 400w, https:\/\/schoolsweek.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Baroness-Barran-headshot-400px-244x244.jpg 244w, https:\/\/schoolsweek.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Baroness-Barran-headshot-400px-147x147.jpg 147w, https:\/\/schoolsweek.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Baroness-Barran-headshot-400px-54x54.jpg 54w, https:\/\/schoolsweek.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Baroness-Barran-headshot-400px-347x347.jpg 347w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Baroness Barran<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Previously, absence reporting has focused on government categories of persistent absentees (those missing 10 per cent of lessons) and severe (those missing half or more).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Barran said honing in on the pupils who miss five to 15 per cent of classes \u2013 those \u201cthose typically missing odd days\u201d would be \u201cthe really big prize\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She added: \u201cI think schools can absolutely be forgiven for focusing on the 10 per cent barrier, because that&#8217;s what we talk about with persistent absence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe \u2018five to 15\u2019 came out of a conversation that we had with the team where we said \u2018but hang on a minute, 10.1 per cent persistent absence is very different to 49.9 per cent persistent absence, maybe we better break it down and see what the bandings are\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt hit us in the face when we started to break it down.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Which children are missing the \u2018odd day\u2019?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Analysis by <a href=\"https:\/\/ffteducationdatalab.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">FFT Education Datalab<\/a> of its 10,000 attendance tracker schools showed around a third of pupils missed five to 15 per cent of school time in autumn and spring this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Those pupils are more likely to have special educational needs and be disadvantaged than those who missed less than 5 per cent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The DfE believes this absence is \u201coften linked to in-school barriers\u201d, whereas severe absence tends to \u201chave more out-of-school drivers\u201d and requires a multi-agency response.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kate Richardson, education director at Cabot Learning Foundation which runs a DfE-backed attendance hub, said an example of a child in the \u201codd day\u201d group is one who doesn\u2019t like Thursdays \u201cbecause they have double PE, and then you dig a bit deeper into that\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She added the core reason for missing classes is sometimes not obvious and conversations are needed with pupils and their families to \u201creally unpick why it is that they\u2019re within that band\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u2018Praise kids for attending\u2019<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Barran also urged schools to focus on \u201cpositive reinforcement\u201d to praise children on good attendance, and perhaps ringing up parents to say \u201cit was fantastic to see\u201d their child in school today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She said: \u201cIt\u2019s really striking [that] the schools that go from almost military discipline on how they analyse the data each day, and then how that translates into this totally personal response.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Barran called for schools to have \u201cespecially strong\u201d curriculum and extra-curricular offers on Fridays when attendance is typically poorest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The DfE is also asking for \u201ccontinued support\u201d for pupils transitioning between the first and second year of secondary school \u2013 dubbed the \u201csecond transition\u201d year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Barran said maintaining the relatively strong attendance of year 7 pupils was crucial to get attendance back to pre-pandemic levels. Figures show the number of year 7 pupils attending for more than 95 per cent of school time was 11 percentage points higher than the current year 11.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, DfE officials are looking at how to make the attendance tool more useful for school governors and trustees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Austerity undermines attendance efforts<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>While education unions have praised the tool, they said a decade of government austerity means schools\u2019 efforts are undermined by collapsing public services and families struggling to cope.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Persistent absence sits at 20 per cent this year so far, <a href=\"https:\/\/schoolsweek.co.uk\/attendance-gap-widens-as-poorer-pupils-fall-behind\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">below last year\u2019s 21.2 per cent figure. That compares to 10.9 per cent in 2018-19.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Association of Schools and College Leaders general secretary Pepe Di\u2019Iasio said: \u201cThe government focuses far too much on the symptoms rather than the causes of pupil absence.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But Barran said \u201cwe can\u2019t put all children in the austerity bucket. We also want to focus on those children where the pattern of their absence suggests that it\u2019s not to do with austerity or mental health, and that there are other things going on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe want to focus on the areas where schools themselves can really make a difference.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">DfE&#8217;s new attendance trends for schools<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Focus on pupils with five to 15 per cent absence<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Support for the &#8216;second transition&#8217; between year 7 and
