Sir Martyn Oliver has said he is open to a chartered status scheme for Ofsted inspectors \u2013 copying the system run for teachers, Schools Week <\/em>understands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The chief inspector of education touched on the fledgling idea during a question and answer session with the Chartered College of Teaching <\/a>(CCT) on Wednesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The online session was only open to college members, but Schools Week<\/em> understands Oliver praised the sense of professionalism that comes with being chartered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He indicated he would reflect on how he could achieve something similar for the inspectorate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chartered status is a professional learning and accreditation pathway for career development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

CCT chief executive Dame Alison Peacock said that Oliver \u201cthought it would be advantageous if inspectors became chartered inspectors\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She added: \u201cHe really likes the idea of the chartered teacher route that the college is establishing because it’s about building knowledge and prestige, and he liked the idea of considering whether we should have chartered inspectors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAnd he was just saying, \u2018well, it’s like chartered accountants, why wouldn’t we want to have chartered inspectors?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Peacock said the CCT would be \u201cvery happy\u201d to engage with the Ofsted chief further on this and to \u201ccarry on the conversation\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

‘Sketching out thoughts and suggestions’<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Ofsted said Oliver was \u201csketching out some thoughts and suggestions\u201d and that there was nothing further to add at this stage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The former Outwood Grange Academies Trust boss has previously talked about how he wants to get more serving practitioners to become inspectors.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said he wants being an inspector to \u201cbecome part of the golden thread\u201d of teacher training and wants inspection to feel like \u201ca peer-review system\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The CCT is the professional body for teachers. According to its website it has 629 chartered teachers. Those who achieve the status get to use \u2018CTeach\u2019 after their name.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chartered teachers are recognised for \u201cevidence-informed, high-quality teaching practice, benefiting their school and the children and young people they teach\u201d, CCT\u2019s website states.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They must be reaccredited every three years to \u201cdemonstrate they continue to uphold the highest standards\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Peacock added that such a route for inspectors could help \u201cbuild expertise, ensuring that the inspectorate is both informed but also able to understand the importance of checking the veracity of evidence, understanding data\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She added: \u201cThese are all really important factors, which would improve the consistency, would improve the quality, would improve the overall professionalism of the workforce.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cUltimately, the end game would be that we don’t need to be scared of inspection because it’s a conversation. That, OK, it\u2019s holding us to account, but we\u2019re pleased to share the things that we\u2019re doing in a professional environment, rather than waiting to be judged.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
