When a child disengages from education, it rarely happens overnight and usually follows a gradual loss of confidence.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
They start feeling like they can\u2019t keep up, they\u2019re always getting it wrong or that learning is something to dread instead of enjoy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
By the time this becomes noticeable in their attendance, behaviour or grades, they\u2019ve probably been struggling internally for a long time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
People often think that once a child falls behind, whether academically or emotionally, it\u2019s impossible to re-engage them. But that\u2019s usually not the case. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Education can be rebuilt at any point. The most important thing isn\u2019t what the child has missed but how the adults around them deal with the stage they\u2019re at now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A child\u2019s learning often breaks down because something else has taken over, whether it be anxiety, constant setbacks, friendship problems or just feeling like they don\u2019t belong. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Some children act out or become quiet, and many still turn up every day but aren\u2019t there mentally, doing the least amount possible while losing more belief in themselves. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
This is almost always because they don\u2019t trust their school, adults and themselves, not because they\u2019re not intelligent or capable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Before we can rebuild learning, children need to feel safe, understood, accepted and that they matter. For pupils who\u2019ve struggled, that sense of safety is often fragile. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Many are just waiting to fail again or to be judged by standards they think they can\u2019t meet, and this is where adults who are steady, calm and predictable really help. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
